VFW marks 75 years
» Townsend VFW Post 6538 and its auxiliary observed their 75th anniversary on March 23.
Both groups were instituted on March 23, 1946.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander-in- Chief
Harold “Hal” Roesch II, presented the post with a Diamond Jubilee Award citation commemorating its anniversary during his recent visit to Massachusetts.
He thanked all the members for their outstanding record of service to the community, to veterans, service members and their families, and to our nation for so many years.
In congratulating them on reaching this landmark, he stated that their continued devotion to protecting and upholding American ideals serves as an inspiration for all to follow.
A motto of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the
United States is to “Honor the Dead by Helping the Living.”
The VFW and auxiliary not only help to protect veterans’ entitlements, but work within the community through various service programs, “Americanism” programs, and youth programs.
The Townsend VFW Post and its auxiliary has long fought to pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families, sponsored events for local veterans as well as hospitalized and homeless veterans in addition to conducting public patriotic programs, sponsoring numerous contests for area youth, providing a facility for area groups to meet, and helping those in need.
For more than 40 years they have spread joy to hundreds each Christmas Eve through its townwide holiday program.
The VFW auxiliary was announced as the firstplace winner in Membership Division 4 at the VFW Auxiliary Department of Massachusetts February virtual mid-winter Conference.
Despite the pandemic, auxiliary members have worked together and through their participation in and contributions to the various national and department auxiliary programs they still earned 174 points in the state awards program, which was the most points earned by any auxiliary in four divisions.
