Falcons earn first win of season

Iacovelli nets pair in field hockey victory

The Fitchburg State field hockey team picked up a road win Saturday, topping Anna Maria College 3- 0.

After a scoreless first half, Fitchburg State broke through late in the third frame as junior Grace Kerr collected a feed from senior Emily Iacovelli and connected on her first collegiate tally for the 1- 0 advantage.

The Falcons (1-1) double their advantage with nine minutes remaining in regulation when Iacovelli fired a shot inside the far post for her first marker on the season.

Anna Maria threated in the 57th minute as Megan Sonia registered a shot on frame, but sophomore keeper Jenna Morse turned the shot aside.

The Green and Gold secured the victory with just under 90 seconds remaining when Iacovelli netted her second goal of the game.

Anna Maria finished with a 9-4 edge in shots, while also holding a slim 8-5 margin in penalty corners, but Morse turned aside all four shots on goal for her first collegiate win and first shutout.

The Falcons return to action on Tuesday for their home opener, hosting Springfiel­d College at 4 p.m.

Men’s soccer team falls

The Falcons continue to seek their first win of the season, having dropped Saturday’s contest to Nichols, 2-1, at Elliott Field.

Bennet Jorgensen netted the first

goal of the season for the Falcons (0-2), finding the back of the net in the 45th minute to tie the game at 1. But after the break, Nicholas McGrath scored to put Nichols ahead for good.

Sebastian Jaramillo made seven saves for Fitchburg State, which travels to Gordon College for its next contest on Saturday evening.

Dean rolls past FSU

The Fitchburg State football team fell in its season opener Saturday, losing 42- 6 on the road at Dean College.

Mac Kimball kicked a pair of field goals in the loss, connecting from 21 and 38 yards out.

Frank Sims IV rushed for 104 yards on 21 carries for the Falcons (0-1), while Tahjeron Wade had 65 yards on 10 carries.

Dean’s Errol Breaux scored six touchdowns in the win, five of which came through the air. Breaux had eight catches for 247 yards in the win.

Women’s soccer postponed

Fitchburg State’s women’s soccer game against Regis on Saturday has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced.
