Falcons blanked by Nichols
Gough makes 12 saves
The Fitchburg State University women’s soccer team dropped a 2- 0 decision on the road at Nichols College on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior goaltender Allison Gough made four saves in the opening half to keep things scoreless, while Nichols netminder Adie Hughes stopped a shot by Ashley Porter, the lone shot on goal for the Falcons in the opening frame.
The Bison took a 1- 0 lead just two minutes into the second half when junior Niah Samboy converted a penalty kick after a defensive foul in the box by the Falcons.
The Green and Gold countered with a partial breakaway from freshman Abaigeal Gilman, but her shot was deniedby Hughes.
Maegan Roy doubled the lead for the hosts in the 67th minute with a deep shot into the upper left corner.
Gough had 12 saves on the day for the Falcons (0-4), not one better than a fingertip stop on a penalty shot from Khalyn Hatcher in the 73rd minute.
On the day, Nichols held a 35-7 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Falcons will travel to Mass. Maritime Academy on Friday night for a 7 p.m. conference tilt.
Field hockey falls at WPI
Two goals from freshman Eliza Dutson propelled WPI to a 2-0 field hockey win over Fitchburg State on Tuesday.
On WPI’s first corner of the game, FSU junior Hanna Walters made a defensive save off an initial shot from Samantha Robison, but Dutson collected the re
bound and deposited the ball in the back of the cage for the early 1- 0 lead.
Dutson scored her ourth of the season in the 56th minute with an unassisted tally to double the lead.
FSU (1-4) junior Colleen Lampreymade six saves in net for the Falcons, while junior Grace Kerr had the lone shot for the Green and Gold.
Fitchburg State travels to Salem State Saturday for a Little East game slated for 11 a.m.
Manyok nabs pair of honors
Fitchburg State sophomore Taban Manyok was named both Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner and Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
The first-year Falcon finished second overall at the 2021 Maple Syrup Challenge with a time of 27:34 over the 8K course to help lead the Green and Gold to second-place finish at the meet, hosted by Vermont Tech on Saturday afternoon.
The Fitchburg State men’s cross country team returns to action Saturday as it compete in the 2021 UMass Dartmouth Invitational, starting at 10: 30 a. m.
