Blue Knights claim pair of wins

Alleva, Long win for Lunenburg

The Lunenburg boys and girls cross country teams each picked up a pair of victories on Tuesday, besting both Fitchburg and Leominster at Hollis Hills Farm.

The boys team beat both the Blue Devils and Red Raiders by scores of 15-50, led by a first-place finish by Michael Alleva (17:08.9).

Vincent Dellasanta ( 18: 25.6), Connor Martin ( 18: 46.9), Dillon Ryan ( 18: 54.3), Zachary Maclure ( 19: 50.4), Banjamin Sweet ( 20: 07.3) and Aiden Contier ( 20: 10.9) all followed as Lunenburg ( 8- 0) took the top seven spots.

Leominster, led by Luke Harper’s 10th-place showing in 20:28.5, topped Fitchburg, 23-54.

Mateo Quintero (20:13.2) was Fitchburg’s top finisher in eighth.

The Lunenburg girls (8- 0) defeated Leominster 16-33 and Fitchburg 15-50.

Lauren Long paced the Blue Knights, taking first in 20:43.1.

Abby Rodriquenz was second in 21:08, Iliana Thomas (21:53.3) was third and Evelyn Mabon (22:52.7) took fourth.

Leominster, winners over Fitchburg 17-36, was led by Anna Serafini’s fifthplace finish in 23:10.4.

Fitchburg’s Bella Caron posted her team’s best time at 26:04.9.

Junior Alexandra Amore scored the game-winner 1:59 into overtime for the guests, lifting the Anchormen to 3-12.

After a scoreless first half, RIC broke through in the 59th minute when freshman Jayde Fernandes redirected a clearing pass into the net for her third goal of the year.

Fitchburg State (1-12-1) knotted the score with just under five minutes left in regulation as newcomer Kendra Peretzman placed an outlet pass to Shannon McCarthy down the left wing and the grad student barreled through two defenders and deposited her fifth of the season inside the far post.

Rhode Island had a chance down the stretch to take the win in regulation with a penalty kick, but Allison Gough made a sensationa­l diving save on freshman Marissa Ruzzano to send the game into extra time.

Gough posted 14 saves in the loss, while· RIC held the advantage in shots (3016) and corners (5-2).

Nolan McMann netted the game’s only goal, scoring in the 69th minute.

Fitchburg State goalkeeper Sebastian Jaramillo stopped 16 shots in defeat.
