Hitting the beach or having a cookout this holiday weekend?

The unof ficial start of summer could be a bit rainy and stormy to start, but the end of the weekend should be “feeling like summer,” according to Boston- area meteorologists at the National Weather Service.

The hottest day of the long weekend will be on Memorial Day, as some spots in the interior of Massachusetts could hit 90 degrees.

“A lot of people say how Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer, and it will definitely be feeling like summer on Monday,” said Andrew Loconto, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office.

The holiday weekend should start out much differently, as unsettled weather with some showers and a few thunderstorms is expected late Friday into Saturday, along with the return of humidity, too.

For the Cape and Islands, most of the rain showers and thunder will swing through Saturday morning before the afternoon dries out with temps in the 60s.

During the afternoon, there will be a better shot for showers and stronger thunderstorms for areas west of Interstate 495, where temps should be warmer in the upper 70s.

“Then Sunday into Monday are generally dry, nicer weather days,” Loconto said.

Temps should jump into the 80s on Sunday for the interior of the Bay State, while temps on the coast should be in the 70s.

Then the 90- degree heat arrives for Memorial Day in the interior, but it should remain comfortable in the 70s along the coast.

Ahead of the holiday weekend, state fire officials on Thursday urged residents to practice fire safety this summer.

So far this spring, officials have seen increased brush and wildland fire activity.

“Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and we want to remind everyone to play it safe as they enjoy the warm weather,” State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey said. “Take the appropriate safety precautions against fires and burns so you can have fun all summer long.”
