Wrong place, wrong time

-

Being at the wrong place at the wrong time this past weekend cost one local man his life, and an area woman a brush with the same end.

David Penney, 58, of Tewksbury, was identified as the victim of a fatal motor-vehicle collision in North Hampton, N.H., Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

According to State Police, he was killed by a Boston woman driving under the influence.

On the same day in the same state, authorities said a Billerica woman was seriously injured in a utility terrain vehicle accident.

In that incident, authorities responded at about 4:30 p.m. to a rollover crash in Berlin, N.H.’S Jericho Mountain State Park. Police said the 20-yearold female passenger, whom they didn’t identify, sustained a significant arm injury.

First responders transported her to Androscoggin Valley Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

As a result of the crash investigation, authorities cited the driver, Andrew Collins, 21, of Billerica, for dangerous operation of an off-highway recreational vehicle.

Fortunately, all three UTV occupants wore helmets, which police said undoubtedly helped lessen the number and degree of injuries.

That, unfortunately, wasn’t David Penney’s fate.

According to State Police, at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, authorities responded to a report of a motor-vehicle crash at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Woodland Road.

Investigators determined a 2015 Black BMW caused a collision with a 2020 Harley-davidson motorcycle, operated by Penney.

Police said Penney was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Penney was a member of the Tewksbury Boy Scouts community, which held a memorial candlelight vigil service in his honor Monday night at St. William Parish Center in Tewksbury, according to the Pennacook Lodge’s Facebook post.

The BMW driver, Jennifer Mccoy, 38, was charged with driving under the influence; she’s scheduled to be arraigned in Rockingham County Superior Court.

We offer our condolences to David Penney’s family, and hope the Billerica passenger realizes there but for the grace of God, go you.
