Fourth transit changes in place

State transportation agencies have adjusted their service plans for the weekend in anticipation of the crowds of people expected to flock to the city for Fourth of July celebrations.

MASSDOT will keep the Sumner Tunnel open this weekend, in lieu of continuing restoration work, and MBTA subways will run on a weekday schedule after 1 p.m. on the holiday.

The City of Boston Transportation Department has also announced a number of traffic and parking restrictions, with the most impact expected during the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on the Esplanade, scheduled for 8-11 p.m. Monday.

The MBTA said trains on the Fitchburg, Framingham/ Worcester, Franklin, Greenbush, Haverhill, Lowell, Middleborough/lakeville and Providence/stoughton lines will hold for 30 minutes after the fireworks display. All other trains will depart as scheduled.

With large crowds expected and a number of parking restrictions in place, the city and MBTA are advising residents and visitors to plan ahead for their holiday travel.

The city advises event attendees against driving

their personal vehicles and instead suggests use of the bike sharing service, Bluebikes, and the MBTA to get around Boston on the holiday.

“For a faster return trip, the MBTA advises riders to purchase a round-trip rather than a one-way ticket,” the city said. “Walking is also a great way to move around Boston.”

On Monday, the MBTA said subways will run on a modified Saturday schedule until 1 p.m. After that, the subway will run on a weekday schedule. The commuter rail will run on a weekend schedule.

Buses, the Silver Line and The RIDE will run on a Sunday schedule. There will be no service on the Hingham

Rowes Wharf ferry. The Hingham-hull-logan Airport-long Wharf ferry will run on a Saturday schedule, and the Charlestown ferry will operate on a weekend schedule.
