Falcons tabbed 7th in lax poll

The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston named Fitchburg State senior Hunter Fortin as one the 33 semifinali­sts for the 22nd Joe Concannon Award on Tuesday.

The Westervill­e, Ohio, native was one of six players representi­ng the MASCAC.

Fortin has had a stellar season for the Falcons, currently leading the team in points with 21, while ranking second in goals with nine and second in assists with 12. In addition, Hunter has posted two power-play tallies over 19 games for Fitchburg State.

The Joe Concannon Award, establishe­d in 2001 after the late Joe Concannon, is presented annually to the best Americanbo­rn college hockey player in New England playing at the Division II or III level. Concannon served as Sports Informatio­n Director at Holy Cross before joining the Boston Globe in the late 1960s. A former member of the Walter Brown Award Selection Committee, Concannon had been a staunch advocate for college hockey and the amateur athletes he covered before his death in 2000.

The Falcons return to action tonight, welcoming Westfield State to the Wallace Civic Center for a MASCAC tilt starting at 6:30 p.m.

Reigning MASCAC regular season champions Westfield State have been chosen by the conference’s coaches to win the league’s women’s lacrosse title this spring.

The Owls earned five first-place votes for 47 points in this year’s poll after going a perfect 7- 0 in MASCAC play last season, with Framingham State, the reigning MASCAC tournament champion, second with the final three firstplace votes for 45 points.

The Falcons notched 16 points in the poll to take seventh.fitchburg State attack Eva Kozikowski found the back of the net 39 times while assisting on 35 others, collecting 27 ground balls and causing eight turnovers.

MCLA rounded out the poll with seven points.

The women’s lacrosse season kicks over the next few weeks with non-conference action. MASCCAC play begins on April 1.

Falcon men grounded by Bears

The Fitchburg State men’s basketball team dropped a 102- 85 MASCAC contest at Bridgewate­r State Wednesday evening.

The Falcons (9-14, 4-7 MASCAC) were paced by Frederick Siayor, who scored 25 points and had six steals in the contest. Quincy Taylor chipped in with a double- double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Javon Taylor had 16 points off the bench. Matthew Tanis added 11 points in the loss.

Alex Gonzalez led four Bears (17-7, 7- 4) in double figures with 25 points.

FSU women lose in rout

The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team fell on the road Wednesday, losing to Bridgewate­r State, 90-32, in MASCAC play.

Olivia Almeida led the Falcons (3-21, 1-10 MASCAC) with nine points, while Morgan Genness added seven in defeat.

Kylee Piche led all scorers, pouring in 17 points for the Bears (18- 6, 9-2).
