Ahead of snow, sleet and freezing rain expected Wednesday night and Thursday morning, Unitil Corporation has issued an advisory in preparation for potential utility impacts in the area.

Mixed precipitation is expected in the FitchburgLeominster area, with total snow accumulations of up to 2 inches according to the National Weather Service. That said, Unitil has recommended customers prepare as they would for any potential winter storm and said the utility would “closely” monitor conditions as they unfold.

Unitil Media Relations Manager Alec O’meara urged customers to be aware of the type of precipitation in their specific area.

“With a messy storm like the one forecasted, what we monitor closely is the type of precipitation that falls and the consistency of any snow,” O’meara said. “Sleet and normal- to- dry snow tendnot to stick to surfaces, while freezing rain and wet, heavy snow can damage trees and tree branches, which can cause outages.”

The utility also urged people tostayaway fromflooded and or debris-laden areas, avoid damaged trees as well as downed cables and wires that could still be energized and to stay safe when possible to avoid interferencewith any potential rescue or restoration efforts.

As they provide real-time outage information online at unitil.com/map, the utility company said it would continue to communicate with customers through Public Service Announcements, the Unitil website, its customer call center and through the media. Those interested were also encouraged to follow storm updates via Unitil social media pages.

Customers that know of or have experienced outages can also report said outages online at unitil.com/reportoutage. For more information, visit unitil.com.
