Lowell’s Dramatically Incorrect Theater Group and Dance Company (DITGDC) bring the realistic rock musical “Next to Normal” to life this weekend and next in the Loft Theater, 9 Central Street.

With book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, the 2008 show centers on a mother who struggles with a worsening bipolar disorder and the effects that managing her illness has on her family. It addresses many of the issues facing people today — grief, depression, mental illness, drug abuse, suicide, ethics in modern psychiatry and the underbelly of suburban life.

It won three Tony Awards including Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley, who played the mother Diana. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The DITGDC production features two casts headed by Jessica Wells as Diana in Cast A, running March 24-26, and Monica Whitlock in that role in Cast B, running March 31 and April 1-2.
