PEPPERELL >> The Albert Harris/ Pepperell Senior Center was crowded with well-wishers to celebrate “Little” Mary’s 100th birthday.

Mary Nowalk, known for her gigantic smile and calling everyone “sweetheart,” was proud to accept her Boston Post Cane which is made of ebony and capped with gold.

For more than 100 years, the Boston Post Cane has been awarded to the oldest residents of 700 small new england towns.

State Rep. Margaret Scarsdale was on hand to present no walk with an official state proclamation to congratulate her on her 100th birthday on Dec. 10.

Nowalk, a five-year survivor of a Soviet forced-labor camp during WWII in Poland, came to the United States in 1961 to visit her sister but stayed when she met her husband-to-be.

She now lives with her only child, Christine Brooks and her family in Pepperell.

Nowalk enjoys her daily visits and lunch with her many friends at the Albert Harris Center/pepperell Senior Center.
