Shelby goes on road, beats Harding

-

MARION — Shelby continued to march through the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference girls tennis chase with Thursday’s 4-1 victory against Marion Harding.

The Lady Whippets, who shared the title last fall with the Presidents, swept the regular season between the two schools with their 14th consecutive triumph. The red and gray stand at 8-0 in the conference and own a two-game advantage over Harding.

The 14-2 SHS girls were a 3-2 winner on their home courts against the Presidents back on Sept. 2.

“Both doubles teams really came through tonight. Marion moved their normal singles into doubles as we faced two solid teams,” said Shelby coach Jeff Kurtzman.

Madison Sharrock and Anna Vogt tripped Lyndsay Mcquown and Taryn Simmers 6-3, 6-3 in first doubles.

“Maddie and Anna had some spectacular net points,” praised the coach of the Whippets.

In double seconds, the SHS tandem of Raegan Gurney and Mollie Eith bested Tyler Simmers and Ryleigh Tillman 6-3, 7-5.

“Raegan and Mollie adjusted well to Marion’s change of tactics in the second set,” pointed out Kurtzman.

Sadie Smith won for SHS in second singles by blasting Sofi Tinnerello 6-0, 6-0.

Olivia Fordyce prevailed in No. 3 singles for Shelby by rallying past

Karli Harris 4-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Marion’s lone win came at first singles as Nicole Flock edged Grace Mahek 7-5, 6-4.

“Sadie took care of business. Olivia played a fantastic match and she would not be denied. Grace is getting close to beating Nicole Flock,” said Kurtzman.

Addie Mayer was a winner in junior varsity single for the visitors.

Monday the Whippets entertain River Valley.
