Virtual event to be held celebrating centennial of women’s suffrage

NEWARK, OH, September 21, 2020 — This year marks one hundred years since the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment and the expansion of women’s voting rights. The centennial provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of the suffrage movement but also to reflect on the continued barriers to suffrage and ongoing struggles for voting rights today. The public is invited to a virtual event on October 5 at 4 p.m. that will bring together five speakers to discuss the histories of the women’s suffrage movement, both locally and nationally, and its legacies.

“This event provides the opportunity to learn more about the complicated histories of women’s suffrage and also to reflect on our civic responsibilities today and the work yet to do in terms of voting rights,” said Elizabeth Dillenburg, assistant professor of history and event creator.

Event Speakers: • Jolie Braun, The Ohio State University curator of modern literature and manuscripts in the Rare Books & Manuscripts Library

• Timothy Bussey, The Ohio State University at Newark lecturer of political science and Kenyon College associate director for the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

• Rita Kipp, president of the League of Women Voters of Licking County

• Lucy Murphy, Ohio State Newark professor of history

• Miranda Shield, Licking County Department of Records and Archives reference archivist and librarian

Lucy Murphy will give an overview of the women’s suffrage movement. Jolie Braun will highlight key collections and resources held at Ohio State’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Library and provide advice about researching suffrage and women’s history. Miranda Shield will present on women’s suffrage and the women’s movement in Licking County. Rita Kipp will speak about the suffrage movement, including its marginalization and exclusion of women of color, and how the League of Women Voters grew from that movement and its ongoing efforts today and especially its work in Licking County. Finally, Timothy Bussey will discuss continued restrictions on voting—specifically voting rights and the transgender community.

A question and answer session will follow the presentations.
