Coach ‘K’ chalks up career win No. 500 in 5-0 triumph

Shelby wrapped up a share of the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference girls tennis championsh­ip after rocking Galion 5-0 Tuesday evening.

The Lady Whippets, winners of 16 consecutiv­e outings, improved to 10-0 in conference and stand at 16-2 overall.

“One more step to an undefeated MOAC championsh­ip,” said SHS coach Jeff Kurtzman. Against the outmanned Tigers, the red and gray didn’t drop a set and lost just a total of three games en route to the regular season sweep.

The victory was also a milestone for Kurtzman — the 500th of his coaching career. He has accumulate­d 235 victories as the girls coach at Shelby. The veteran coach has also won 265 contests as the boys coach. Results of the match were:

No. 1 singles — Grace Mahek, S, walloped Jerika Cassady 6-0, 6-0.

No. 2 singles — Sadie Smith, S, bounced Kadence Fairchild 6-0, 6-0.

No. 3 singles — Aly Deane, S, tripped Kyah Coulter 6-0, 6-3.

No. 1 doubles — Raegan Gurney and Anna Vogt, S, blanked Emma Maguire and Lydia Mccabe 6-0, 6-0.

No. 2 doubles — Madison Sharrock and Olivia Fordyce, S, tamed Zoe Neagand and Taylor Henry 6-0, 6-0.

“Aly did a good job filling in tonight,” said Kurtzman.

Junior varsity doubles winners for Shelby were Gracie May/ Alexis Mcclain, Morgan Adkins/ Olivia Hicks and Addie Mayer/suzie Huston. Kayla Niese prevailed in a reserve singles clash.

Today the Whippets welcome Ottawa Hills in third round play of the Ohio Tennis Coaches Associatio­n team tournament. Thursday and Saturday the red and gray will host the MOAC tournament with doubles being played Thursday and singles on Saturday.
