Lady Whippets rule MOAC tournament

Shelby captured the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference girls tennis tournament which was completed Saturday at the SHS courts.

The Lady Whippets, who won four of the five positions, finished with 33 points. Marion Harding was the runner-up with 25 and River Valley was third with 21. Following were Marion Pleasant (12), Ontario (9), Clear Fork (7) and Galion (3).

SHS swept all three championsh­ips in singles play.

Shelby’s Grace Mahek prevailed at first singles and dispatched Marion Harding’s Nicole Flock in the finals. The loss was the first in two seasons for Flock.

Sadie Smith won at No. 2 singles for the Whippets and upended Lydsey Mcquown of Marion Harding for the crown.

Raegan Gurney provided SHS with the singles sweep by downing Tyler Simmers of Marion Harding in the championsh­ip at the No. 3 position.

Mollie Eith and Olivia Fordyce led Shelby to victory in No. 2 doubles. They bested Ashiah Harris and Courtney Cookson of River Valley in finals.

The Whippets No. 1 doubles team of Madison Sharrock and Anna Vogt fell in the title matchup to Harding’s Taryn Simmers and Ryleigh Tillman.

The next competitio­n for the SHS netters is Wednesday at River Valley.
