SHS golfers advancing to district tourney

HURON — Shelby’s varsity boys golf team advanced to district level competition after capturing a third place finish in the Division II Sectional contested Thursday at Thunderbird Hills Golf Course.

The Whippets totaled 343 on the day and sewed up the final available team berth. Galion was the runaway sectional champion with 310 and Sandusky Perkins was the runner-up with 341.

“I couldn’t be more prouder of the team,” beamed SHS coach Justin Schroeder.

Senior Lincoln Finnegan paced Shelby with an 80 that included a 38 on the back side. Sophomore Brody Miller was next with 82. Completing the scoring were sophomore Carson Brubaker and senior Eli Winchester with 90 and 91, respectively. Ashton Hoffbauer, a freshman, had 92.

“Lincoln did his thing and did a nice job fighting back on the back. Brody was unbelievable today while Carson and Eli played well,” said Schroeder.

After playing a practice round Sunday, Schroeder noted the course did not play the same today.

“It played differently because it was a bit windy today and the greens were not as firm as they were Sunday,” said the coach.

Rounding out the field were Clear Fork (347), Ontario (348), Willard (355), Bellevue (358), Vermilion (358), Clyde (361), Huron (364) and Edison (374).

Schroeder also said his club was motivated, since no one gave his team a chance to advance.

“The team was motivated and wanted to prove a point. Obviously, not having Nicole (Jones) is a big loss and the they took it personally,” said Schroeder. Jones, who played on the boys team all season, is now participating in the girls tournament and she has qualified to the district as an individual. Also, the red and gray dealt with some additional adversity with an injury to Carson Garrett who was unable to play.

The SHS boys will vie in the district tournament next Thursday at the Findlay Country Club.
