Although the volleyball season has been a course of ups and downs, the play of senior outside hitter Kassie Stine has been a constant for Shelby.
Saturday afternoon her defensive work for her career came into focus during a nonleague affair against visiting Sandusky Perkins.
Stine’s second dig early in the opening set was No. 1,000 for her career. She finished the afternoon with a teamhigh 13.
For reaching the milestone, coach Brandie Albert presented a ball before Stine darted off into the stands to receive well-wishes and flowers from her family who were in attendance.
“That’s a great milestone to reach for her and one not many get to,” said Albert.
Outside of that brief celebration, there were not any highlights as the Pirates, ranked 13th in the state among Division II schools, swept the Lady Whippets 3-0 by scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-8. The loss drops the red and gray to 8-12 on the season while their opponent improves to 16-2.
“Perkins is solid and dominated the court today,” said Albert. “Defensively, they pick up everything and we are used to serving aggressively at teams to score or throw their offense out of system at least, and that didn’t happen.”
The home team managed just two aces with their serving.
According to the SHS coach there weren’t a lot of weaknesses with Sandusky Perkins.
“There were not many holes in their defense to find to hit to score. We were trying to hit around their big blocking team, instead of using the block,” said Albert.
The end result was 21 hitting errors as a team.
Miscues added up, noted the coach. Shelby was guilty of 13 reception mistakes and six ball-handling infractions.
“It’s hard to compete when error-ridden,” said the coach of the Whippets.
Serving at 100 percent for SHS were Makenna Miller and Sydnie Seibert.
Topping Shelby in kills were Stine (6), Miller (4) and Olivia Baker (4).
Marleigh Albert had nine assists, followed by Seibert with six.
Miller led the home team with 19 receptions.
Tuesday’s Mid Ohio Athletic Conference home match with Clear Fork has been postponed and rescheduled for Thursday, Oct. 12. The Whippets will host Mansfield Madison Thursday evening.
