NORWALK — Nathan Zehner, Carson Ingram and Zach Mcmillan were upper weight class winners and helped the Shelby wrestling team to a runner-up finish at the Norwalk Pool Tournament Saturday.

The trio was a combined 12-0 on the mats as the Whippets finished with 232 points and only trailed Tiffin Columbian with 293. Rounding out the field were Clear Fork (203.5), Norwalk (186), Norwalk St. Paul (146.5) and Toledo St. Francis (60).

“I thought we wrestled pretty well overall against some pretty good competition. Placing second as a team I thought was a big step and has got these guys into helping to determine what kind of team we can be,” said SHS coach Ted Tonn.

During the day, the 195-pound Zehner earned career victory No. 100 en route to a 4-0 slate.

Zehner also knocked off the state’s ninth-rated wrestler in the championship match and did it in exciting fashion. The red and gray senior was a 5-4 winner in triple overtime against Tiffin Columbian’s Kasean Hatley. His other three wins were all first-period pins.

Ingram, competing at 220 pounds, was a perfect 5-0 for Shelby. Four of his wins were by fall and they were all in the opening period. The quickest was 36 seconds against Robert Tong of Tiffin Columbian. The senior defeated runner-up Fred Proto of Clear Fork by a 6-4 score.

Senior Zach Mcmillan was 3-0 at 285 pounds with a pin and two forfeits. He decked Tiffin’s Max Fortney in a minute.

Garrett Montgomery was second at 132 pounds with a 4-1 ledger. During the tourney he scored a 4-3 over Clear Fork’s Isaiah Thomas, a state qualifier. His other three wins were by pin.

Trace Thomas was the 152-pound runner-up with a 4-1 mark. The senior posted a pair of falls.

Third-place finishers for the Whippets were Garrett Baker (138 pounds) and Garrett Bates (285).

Placing fourth for SHS were A.J. Roll (113 pounds), Wyatt Kilgore (138), Skyler Winters (170), David Ray (170) and Tyler Shatzer (285).

Fifth-place wrestlers for Shelby were Nathan Ganzhorn (126 pounds), Micah Miller (145), Max Weaver (160), Sebastian Barker (195) and Mark Forwith (220). Garet Sipe was sixth at 160.

The next competition for the Whippets is a home meet Wednesday, Jan. 20, against Highland and New London.
