ONTARIO — With a two-game lead in the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference standings and Ontario lurking in the shadows, Shelby put some more distance between themselves and the Warriors with Friday’s 65-53 boys basketball victory.

The Whippets, who outpointed the home team in each of every quarter, maintained their two-game lead in the conference as they improved to 7-0 and upped their overall ledger to 10-1. OHS falls to 4-3 in the league and is 8-5 in all games.

The state’s eighthranked team in Division II is marching toward a second straight conference title and continuing to go about their business of accomplishing their first goal.

“I’ve stressed to the kids the first goal is winning conference and told them we needed take care of tonight. It’s one game at a time,” said SHS coach Nathon Loney.

The latest matchup between conference rivals featured a shootout between Shelby’s T.J. Pugh and Ontario’s Griffin Shaver. When the dust settled, Pugh had the better number as he finished with 28 while Shaver tallied 24, including 15 from the foul line.

“T.J. hit a lot of tough jumpers coming off ball screens. In the second half we moved him down to the post and we did a nice job with our ball movement the second half to get the ball inside,” said Loney. “They hit a lot of tough shots the first half and I told our guys you’re playing solid defense and getting high hands on everything. A lot of the shots they hit the first half didn’t fall the second half.”

Behind a three-pointer by Shaver 2 1/2 minutes into the game, the Warriors grabbed an early 7-0 lead.

The Whippets would tie matters at 12 and 14 before a three-pointer from the top of the arc by Pugh off an assist from Cody Lantz gave the visitors the lead for good at 17-14 with 1:12 on the clock.

Pugh’s 42-footer as time ran out provided SHS a 22-18 lead at the end of one.

Leading by as many as nine, Shelby settled for a 33-28 lead at the intermission.

Back-to-back corner threes by Jeremy Holloway and Lantz gave Shelby a 39-28 lead in the first minute of the third quarter, but the Warriors refused to go away and closed to four (41-37) midway through the frame.

The Whippets scored the next six, capped by Issaiah Ramsey’s layin off a feed from Lantz to make it 47-37.

Ontario got as close as six a couple of times early in the fourth and then SHS closed it out by swishing 9 of 10 free throws in the final 3:29 to cement the win.

Lantz tallied 13 in the win while Grant Hiatt had nine and Holloway eight.

Today’s game with Bellevue has been canceled because of a COVID issue with the Redmen. Monday the red and gray welcome Olentangy in a nonleague affair.
