Wrestling during the COVID-19 pandemic has posed its own set of challenges.

Despite those hurdles, Shelby coach Ted Tonn feels his program has fared better than some others.

“It’s been a challenge from the way you practice, who you’re limited with, and week-to-week you don’t know who you’ll have,” said Tonn. “Everyone has faced the same challenges and we’ve come out better than most. It’s a year like I’ve never had in a couple decades of coaching.”

Wednesday the Whippets hosted a trimatch and they posted wins over Newark Catholic (54-21) and Sparta Highland (4536).

With two more victories, the SHS wrestlers improved their record to 8-3 on the winter.

“We wrestled pretty well,” noted Tonn. “We knew Newark Catholic had some good kids and we battled them pretty good. We knew it would be a scrap back and forth with Highland. We wrestled better than we did a week ago.”

The Shelby foursome of Garrett Montgomery, Micah Miller, Davey Ray and Carson Ingram each went 2-0 with two falls apiece.

At 132 pounds, Montgomery pinned previously undefeated Nico Richards of Newark Catholic and then decked Andrew Bellas of Highland.

Miller scored a pin against Matthew Kirk of Newark Catholic at 145 pounds and then matted Damien Daniel at 152 pounds.

Both of Ray’s pins were at 182 pounds against Tanner Wert of Newark Catholic and Chandler Stevens of Highland.

Ingram pinned Matthew Spearman of Newark Catholic at 220 pounds and then matted Triston Hinkle of Highland.

Trace Thomas, at 145/152, won by pin and also be decision.

Garrett Woodhull also had a pin for the Whippets at 160.

Friday the SHS wrestlers are back in action when they travel to Twinsburg.
