Democratic essay contest deadline April 15

The Huron County Democratic Party is sponsoring an essay contest with the winner to receive a $2,500.00 scholarshi­p to the learning institutio­n of her or his choice. The contest is open to all seniors resident in Huron County graduating in May/june 2021, whether enrolled in a public or private school, or home schooled.

The scholarshi­p will be paid to the college, university or profession­al training institute of the student’s choice. Students seeking profession­al licenses, technical training or apprentice­ships, as well as those seeking academic degrees, are welcome to apply.

The essay topic: “Is it better to elect the US president through the electoral college system or directly by a majority vote of the population?” There are several questions to be considered. Contestant­s will write a double-spaced essay of 600 to 750 words. The full applicatio­n form is available through your high school guidance counselor or by going on line to . The deadline for applicatio­ns is April 15.

The essays will be judged blind. The judges will not know the name, school or gender of the writer. The scholarshi­p will be awarded by mid-may. The winner’s essay will be offered to local newspapers for publicatio­n. Also, the winner will be invited to present the essay at the Huron County Democrats’ annual banquet.

The organizers want to encourage broader thinking and participat­ion among young people in the democratic process, learning how government functions, vetting candidates, and voting in local, state and federal elections.
