Three Whippets chosen for North-south football game

Under normal circumstances their would be an annual North-south football game sponsored by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association.

But during the current COVID-19 pandemic there is no such thing as normalcy and our lives have all been affected in a variety of ways.

Even the annual North-south game scheduled for Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon was unable to escape the current landscape of life and go on as planned. Like 2020, the annual all-star game had to be called off for 2021 as well due to the pandemic.

Despite the game being cancelled, the OHSFCA still wanted to honor football athletes around the state and pick their North and South rosters.

Shelby, which reached the regional championship game under coach Rob Mahaney before falling to eventual state champion Van Wert, had three players selected for the North Division IV, V, VI and VII roster.

Whippets to be chosen were Owen Fisher, Camden Walter and Marek Albert.

Fisher, who became the Whippets alltime leading rusher for a career last fall, will continue his education and play football at Ashland University.

Walter, a key force on the offensive line for SHS, will join Fisher at Ashland University to further his education and also play football.

Albert missed a majority of the regular season due to injury and returned to boost Shelby on the defensive side of the ball in their playoff run. His plans call for going to the University of Charleston in West Virginia and to also play football.

Mahaney, who was also chosen to be an assistant coach for the North, said it’s an honor to have three players selected.

“You’re talking about players in Divisions IV through VII. There’s 35 spots and for us to have three players selected is a great statement about our team and an honor.”

Fisher and Walter were first-team Allohio honorees in 2020 while Albert collected first team All-ohio accolades as a junior in 2019.

“It’s one more honor for them and I’m very proud of them,” said Mahaney.
