MARENGO — Although Carson Ingram fell a win shy of reaching the podium at the Division II State wrestling tournament at Highland School over the weekend, Shelby coach Ted Tonn was proud of his 220pound senior.

“I’m happy for Carson. He’s come a long way,” reflected Tonn.

The coach of the Whippets remembers the first day Ingram reported to practice, noting he was a “gangly kid” as a youngster.

“Carson put in a lot of time in the weight room and on the mats to get better. That’s what you want as a coach,” said Tonn.

“He made a name for himself as a top five wrestler,” added Tonn about Ingram, who wraps up his career with 121 wins for the red and gray.

Ingram also etched his name into the record books for pins in a single season with 38 and falls for a career with 96, breaking the marks previously held by Brahm Ginter.

Despite posting a 1-2 record at state, Tonn felt that Ingram performed well.

“Carson didn’t under perform. He was relaxed and just ran into some great kids,” said the SHS coach.

Ingram, who ends the season at 43-5, fell by pin at 2:32 in the opening round against Elijah Llewellyn of Indian Creek. He rebounded and matted Cody Logan of Canal Fulton Northwest in 25 seconds, but was eliminated from competition when he was pinned in 28 seconds by Reese Skaggs of St. Clairsville.

“Carson had a tough first match against a returning state qualifier. He came back and made quick work of his next opponent. In the match to place he faced a top five wrestler who was upset in the first round and ran into a real bear that match,” said Tonn.
