Shelby Fire hosts grain rescue class

The Ohio Fire Academy traveled to Shelby on Saturday to perform a grain rescue class. the first time the Ohio Fire Academy had performed the class for Shelby. The class was also free of charge. In addition to Shelby, Marion Township, Polk, Shiloh and Franklin Township were in attendance. “There has to be at least three department­s attend the class and they will come for free. have them come just for your department but then you have to pay for it,” Thompson explained. The class was split up into two sessions. In the morning portion it was all classroom activity describing how the grain bins were constructe­d and how to cut one open if it was needed to make a rescue. Throughout instrument­al in getting the equipment for the Shelby Fire Department. The equipment was donated to the department. “He was very instrument­al in this and we want to thank him for that,” Thompson said. In total, there were about 25 firefighte­rs who attended the class. afternoon portion, it was more hands on experience with showing how to perform rescues. Thompson explained the department tries to have one large learning experience per year. Although this specific training had been planned for last year, but due to the coronaviru­s pandemic it was postponed. “We try to have something different for them to take part in,” Thompson said. In a previous Shelby Daily Globe article, it was reported that safety related equipment would be arriving to the Shelby region as part of an effort to assist the area’s agricultur­al community.
