Shelby and Ontario battled to a 10-10 standoff through seven innings when the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference varsity baseball opener for both schools was suspended due to darkness Tuesday evening.

The contest was to be resumed today at Ontario, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The regularly scheduled game between the two schools would then follow.

The Whippets, who were haunted by six fielding errors, had to overcome a 10-3 deficit.

The fielding miscues led to eight unearned runs by the Warriors and made for a frustrating afternoon, noted coach Jon Amicone.

“That’s not the brand of baseball we need to play. The kids showed a lot of fight, but we can’t have self-inflicted wounds like that,” said the SHS coach.

While disappointed with the defensive aspect of the game, Amicone was “very proud of the comeback” by his team.

Trailing 7-0, Shelby picked up three in the fourth. The Warriors pushed across three in the top of the fifth to go up seven.

The Whippets erupted for six runs in the bottom of inning No. 5 to make it 10-9. The big blow of the stanza was a two-run double by Nathan Zehner.

SHS got a runner on second with one out in the sixth but came up empty.

In the seventh, Jeremy Holloway was hit by a pitch and tied the game when Logan Green drilled a triple to the left field fence. He was left stranded after a pair of groundouts and the game was suspended.

Zehner and Green each laced two hits while Marek Albert, Marshall Shepherd and Luke Shepherd all had one.
