Trash talk comes up at city council
SHELBY- Discussions over trash containers were brought up by Councilman Garland Gates during public comment at the regular city council meeting held on Monday night.
Gates addressed fellow council members and explained a constituent living on 6th Street had contacted him about residential trash containers being left out.
“There is an ordinance which talks about people needing to remove them from the public right of way after pick up,” Gates said.
In addition, Gates explained trash couldn’t be put out sooner than 24 hours from the resident’s scheduled pick up time.
“The concern was a situation across the street from the constituent and it is not that they are leaving the containers at the curve side, but they are being pulled back and are still in full view of his house. It is a three unit apartment building across the street from his home. Two of those residents have their trash containers in front of the apartment. One is quite over flowing,” Gates said.
Gates presented photos to council members of the issue at hand.
“His suggestion in so many words is that we should require the trash containers at least be pulled back beyond the plain of the front of the house,” Gates said.
Since the constituent had reached out to Gates about the issue, Gates said he explained he would bring the issue up to fellow council members.
“I did drive up and see the situation. What he had described to me on the phone was indeed the situation,” Gates said.
Councilman Charlie Roub added he had also had a discussion with the constituent about the issue.
