Shepherd tops list of district football honorees from SHS

Marshall Shepherd spent the season rewriting the passing record book at Shelby and his efforts did not go unnoticed as he was named the Division IV Northwest District Offensive Player of the Year by the Ohio Prep Sportswrit­ers Associatio­n Wednesday evening.

The Whippet threw for a school-record 4,273 yards his senior year by completing 65 percent (270 of 415) of his passes for 48 touchdowns. All were new high water marks for the program.

Additional­ly, Shepherd carried the ball 79 times for 368 yards and tallied 12 touchdowns. He also kicked 54 extra points as well as a pair of field goals for SHS, which won its third straight Mid Ohio Athletic Conference championsh­ip and finished the year with a 9-3 record.

Teammates joining Shepherd on the first team were wide receiver Blaine Bowman and offensive lineman Camden Armstrong. Bowman hauled in 95 passes for 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Three from Shelby were on the first team defense — Andre Hill, Caleb Baker and David Ray. Hill led the red and gray with five intercepti­ons and on offense caught 94 passes for 1,510 yards with 17 touchdowns. Baker had a team-leading eight quarterbac­k sacks and Ray topped the squad with 126 tackles.

Second-team district honors on the defensive side went to

Connor Henkel and Garrett Baker.

Earning honorable mention accolades were Xander Wilkins, Issaiah Ramsey, Skyler Winters, Luke Shepherd and A.J. Cornette.
