Montgomery, Hoffman lead Shelby swimmers
Freshman Emma Montgomery made a big splash in her high school swim debut as she had a part in four first place finishes as Shelby captured its season opener Tuesday evening. Montgomery teamed up with Reyna Hoffman, Riley Lewis and Elli Mayer to win the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays in times of 2:12.77 and 4:33.28, respectively, as the Lady Whippets rounded up 107 points in besting Mount Vernon (61) and East Knox (1).
The SHS ninth grader was also triumphant in the 50 freestyle with 29.14 and 100 butterfly with 1:12.19.
Hoffman, a senior, was equal to the task as her parts in the winning relays were part of a successful outing. She also swept the 200 individual medley with 2:51.63 and the 100 backstroke with 1:12.34.
Adding to the firstplace total for the Shelby girls were Mayer in the 100 freestyle (1:07.14), Sydney Bachtel in the 400 freestyle (6:03.05) and Lewis in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.21).
The boys portion of the meet between the Whippets and the Yellow Jackets finished in a 56-56 tie.
Paxton Gibson topped the SHS boys with victories in the 50 freestyle (27.08) and 100 freestyle (1:05.42). He teamed with Wyatt Mckenzie, Ty Cox and Blake Muntis to take the 200 freestyle relay (1:57.65).
Also winning for Shelby were Cox in the 200 freestyle (2:45.63), Muntis in the 200 individual medley (2:44.33), Hayden Faith in the 100 backstroke (1:24.28) and Mckenzie in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.30).
Saturday the Whippet swim teams are in Mansfield for the Friendly House Invitational.
