Whippets top Granville in overtime 64-56

MOUNT VERNON — Shelby found its scoring punch in the overtime period and downed Granville 64-56 Thursday at Ariel Arena on the campus of Mount Vernon University.

Leading by eight at halftime, the Whippets saw their lead dwindle to a single point at the end of the third quarter when the red and gray managed just a single field goal.

The Blue Aces rallied from a six-point deficit late in the fourth period to push the game to overtime.

The four-minute overtime was all SHS by an 18-10 count. Andre Hill accounted for nine in the extra period.

Shelby led 18-11 after one quarter and 32-24 at the intermissi­on.

“We had energy at the start,” noted coach Greg Gallaway.

Hill powered Whippets with the 26 points. He drilled four three-pointers and was 8-of-8 at the foul line. Alex Bruskotter was next with 22.

“As a team we played good defenser. We wanted to be solid guarding the basketball. Jeremy Holloway was big in the middle for us, altering and blocking shots, and rebounding the basketball,” said Gallaway.

Free throw shooting was also big for SHS. The winners made 17 of 18 charity tosses

“We made huge free throws at the end of the game against a very good opponent,” said Gallaway.

Next Wednesday the Whippets travel to Willard.
