What to do if you are drinking this holiday weekend

-

With New Year right around the corner, many are ready to celebrate having made it through yet another year. A drink or two is to be expected, but if you are going to be drinking, you are greatly encouraged to keep yourself and others safe by not operating a vehicle.

How to detect if you or someone else is intoxicated

There are many signs of intoxication, and most people know when they have met their alcohol limit. Signs of intoxication include:

• Slurred speech

• Lower inhibitions

• Sensation of warmth

• Loss of balance and coordination

• Loss of fine motor skills

• Blurred or double vision

• Slow reaction time

• Etc.

If you suspect someone has been drinking and you can do so safely, remove their keys from them to ensure they do not operate a vehicle.

How to avoid drinking and driving

According to NHTSA reports, 28 people die every day due to alcohol-related accidents, all of which could have been prevented. Don't let yourself or a loved one become one of those 28 victims. There are many steps and opportunities you can use to stay safe this New Year's Eve.

The simplest option is not to drink, especially if you are going out alone. However, if you plan to go out, and there is a possibility that alcohol may be involved, it is always best to have a designated driver to ensure everyone makes it home safely. If you have a family member or friend who is willing to stay sober and drive, it is the best alternative to someone who has been drinking.

For those who want to go out but don't have anyone to drive them, you can use various mobile service apps, including Uber, Lyft, Curb, and many others. These apps provide users with different options for requesting rides, carpooling in the area, and some even deliver food right to your door. You can even contact a local taxi service, which can be found in

Not everyone can afford taxi services, but being a responsible driver should be a priority.

If you want to drink but have no means of safely returning to your house, consider staying home with family or friends. Watching the ball drop from the luxury of your living room is always a safe option, and you can freely drink without the worry of how you are getting home.

If you suspect a driver is impaired or intoxicated, please pull over and call 9-11. To learn more about Indiana's drinking and driving laws, please visit https://dui.drivinglaws.org/indiana.php .
