SHS Alumni excited about plans for August 19th Skiles Field Farewell

The Shelby High School Alumni met on Saturday, May 14th. The upcoming Hall of Distinctio­n was discussed. October 1, 2022, is the date for the ceremony at Shelby High School, followed by the reception at Shelby Crossings. Possible tours of the new buildings were discussed for that evening.

Brooke Burkhalter reported the Shelby High School Alumni Associatio­n is currently on Facebook and will be updated on a regular basis. A discussion was held regarding a person to take charge and update Facebook.

Principal, John Gies stated Shelby has many All-ohio athletes this year. Shelby sports have been outstandin­g this year with four league champions in various sports. Gies also reported the high school has been working on graduation plans.

SHS English teacher, Andrew Guertler, will be the speaker.

Gies also reported next week will be the end of school. The awards will be Friday, the 13th. Normally, scholarshi­ps average around $200,000, but this year it has hit an all-time record of over $300,000. Gies reported this class of seniors has been a wonderful class to work with and to get things done.

Supt. Tim Tarvin reported the State Street project connecting to the school complex will be completed on the first day of school. Also, there will be a wall approximat­ely 70 feet long at the Athletic Complex recognizin­g contributo­rs who have made donations to make the Complex a beautiful success.

A discussion was held regarding the last football game that will be played at Skiles Field. On August 19th the Whippets will play their first football game for the school year 2022-2023 at Skiles Field. Plans are being made to make this game a memorable event since it will be the last game at Skiles. A tailgate and other options were discussed. Lisa Baker is working on arranging an Alumni Band to play and the SHS Band will be playing at the game. A tailgate is being planned with numerous food trucks available. The Booster Stand will also be available for Whippet clothing. A discussion was held regarding having a former football coach of SHS being the main speaker for the evening.

Since its inception, the Shelby High School Alumni Associatio­n has provided supplies and equipment to enhance the educationa­l environmen­t at Shelby High School. All SHS alumni are welcome to join the group. The next meeting will be on June 11th at 10 o’clock at the high school.
