Streetscape project bringing new traffic changes to downtown Shelby
The Ohio Department of Transportation is providing further details about upcoming traffic changes as downtown Shelby's streetscape project reaches a new phase.
In a written announcement, ODOT said that
State 39/96 (Main Street) at the State Route 39 (Mansfield Avenue/ Broadway Street) intersection would close for 60 days beginning Monday, June 6.
"Crews will be installing sidewalks and crosswalks, completing signal improvements, completing streetscape items and drainage system improvements at the intersection," the announcement via news release stated.
Travel on Main Street through the State Route 96/Main St and Mansfield Avenue/broadway intersection will be closed with detour signs provided, the city said on its website.
Local businesses "remain open and ready to serve you during this construction period," the city stated.
Main Street from High School Avenue to the east will remain open, the city also stated.

The full detour route for eastbound motorists, ODOT said in its announcement, will be:
* State Route 61 south to Mickey Road
* East on Mickey Road to State Route 39
* South on State Route 39 to U.S. 30
* East on U.S. 30 to State Route 13 * North on State Route 13 to State Route 96
Westbound motorists are advised to follow the reverse route.
Aug. 5 is the project end date, according to estimates.
In Shelby, Mansfield Avenue/ Broadway Street will be reduced to one lane of traffic at the Main Street intersection and will have two-way traffic maintained by a portable traffic signal during the 60-day closure, ODOT said in the release.
During a recent Shelby City Council meeting, Councilman Charles Roub inquired if the city's unrelated upcoming culvert work along Technology Parkway would occur at the same time as the tem
porary closure announced by ODOT.
"The repairs to the culvert on Technology Parkway, that's not going to take place while the Broadway interchange is closed down, is it?" Roub asked.
He was assured by city project coordinator Joe Gies that it is not.
Meanwhile, work was continuing on the streetscape project elsewhere in Shelby.
ODOT said that State 61 (Gamble Street) at the State Route 39/96 Main Street intersection continues to be closed as a 60-day project there nears its completion.
Crews are installing sidewalks and crosswalks, completing signal improvements, completing streetscape items and drainage system improvements at the intersection, ODOT said.
That, too, is part of the Shelby revitalization project.
The detour route for southbound motorists is listed as:
* State Route 61 south to State Street
* East on State Street to Broadway Street
* South on Broadway Street to State Route 39 * South on State Route 39 to Mickey Road
* West on Mickey Road to State Route 61
The detour is the reverse for northbound motorists.
That portion of the project is estimated to end Friday, June 10, ODOT said.
For that work, Main Street traffic was being reduced to one lane at the State Route 61 intersection with two-way traffic maintained by a portable traffic signal during the 60-day closure.
Overall, the downtown Shelby revitalization project phases include the streetscape along Main Street from Gamble Street to Broadway, the Black Fork Commons Plaza enhancement south of Main Street and west of the Black Fork River, and a Black Fork trail and stream restoration efforts.
"SR 39, SR 96, and SR 61 are a part of the sidewalk installation and streetscape improvements in the city of Shelby," ODOT noted.
