A Photograph Gallery for Sale – The Stock, fixtures, and good will of the gallery recently occupied by Miss Flint, is offered for sale at a bargain. For further information, apply to S. Coltman, at the Coltman House, Shelby, Ohio.
Cool – A young man who was about to jump from a train in motion was deterred by a reporter, who asked for his name, age, business, and residence, for an obituary item.
Concert – A friendly vocal contest, between the “Old Folk’s,” under the lead of J.B. Meredith, and the Euterpean Society, of Shelby, under the supervision of conductor G.W. Bowman-singing alternately--is to come off at the New Brick Hall, in Shelby on the evening for the 31st; the proceeds for the relief of the poor in Shelby. The public are cordially invited to attend; as a food time is anticipated.
A Scare – On last Saturday evening, our quiet village was disturbed by the shrill cry of fire. We heard the alarm, and joined the runners. Young men left their girls standing in the streets, while they, hat in hand, made a bee-line for the fire. Men of business, closed their stores, and with headlong speed, rushed to the conflagration. Old men, who were unable to leave their homes, opened wide their doors, and stood aghast, enquiring of every passer by, where is the fire. But the congregation of fire extinguishers had arrived where the great “scare” was, it was all over; one bucket of water had done the “whole thing”--drowned the fire out, and swept part of the
Barbers chimney away. Bully for George, he is as good as two steam engines himself.
Neat – Our old friend, the Norwalk Reflector, comes to us as neat as a new pin, all dressed up in a new frock, the Reflector is one of the best papers on our exchange list
Disgraceful – Some of our “nice” young men undertook to create a disturbance during the service at the U.B. Church, on Monday evening last. They were arrested, and very considerably loaned the Town $7, and cost.
New Concert Hall – The new Hall erected by the Messers. Haislet & Bowman is finished, and too much praise cannot be awarded to Messers. H. and B. for its completion. The stage is 18x42 and fitted up in magnificent style, with drop curtains, scenery, foot lights, and more. Two fine dressing rooms are attached to the stage. Shelby can well be proud of the Hall, and of the enterprise of two of its most successful businessmen.
Dismal – Monday last, was one of the most gloomy days that we have had for some time. The streets were very slippery, we saw several persons, male and female, pick themselves up off the pavement with astounding quickness.
Phil Sheriden denies the latest of the matrimonial stories concerning him.
Fire – On Friday afternoon, the residence of Daniel Post, two miles South of this place was discovered on fire, and before assistance could be rendered, was totally destroyed. They succeeded in saving some of the contents. The origin of the fire is unknown. Loss: $3,000. Insured for $1,500 in the Farmer’s Mutual.
