- By Emily Schwan

Last Tuesday’s Sharon Township Trustees meeting began with the approval of bills and then the fiscal officer’s report. Kimberly Stover led discussion on the End of the Month Reconciliation and Reports for December, the completed Year End Annual Financial Report which requires the trustees to sign many P.O.S She also discussed the temporary appropriations, Insurance Certificates for the truck (Grove), and the Mileage Certification which required signatures. Stover also presented the Richland County Zoning Resolution Letter and Richland County Public Health Report to the trustees.

On the agenda was legislation to adopt Temporary Appropriations to meet the immediate obligations of the township until Permanent Appropriations are prepared and approved. Stover said the approval date will depend upon receipt of financial data from the County Auditor. The Temporary Appropriations included items in the General Fund, the Motor Vehicle License Fund, the Gas Tax Fund, the Road & Bridge Fund, and Permissive Sales Tax Fund totaling $693,080. Jason Snyder made a motion to approve, Adam Schroeder seconded, and the motion passed.

Shelby’s Fire Chief Mike Thompson attended the Sharon Township Trustees meeting to present the Shelby Fire Report. He presented this report to the trustees in writing and informed them that SFD has hired three new employees this month. Chief Thompson then brought up the agreement between Shelby and Sharon Township and said he would like to discuss the mission change and slow revenue. There was a 12% increase in runs over three years and SFD just took over EMS. Other issues included SFD ordering a new ambulance, looking to expand the Fire Department building, and ladder truck 37 is down and needs parts.

Resident Comments were then presented by Gary Biglin. He presented four pages of recently passed bills that he thought were of interest to the township including House Bill 501 and Senate Bill 52 pertaining to local solar zoning regulation. In the minutes, Stover wrote, “He suggested that the zoning board meet with the inspector to discuss and the trustees look into it at the upcoming state township convention.” This legislation passed on December 29, 2022.

The Road Superintendent Report was given by Tyler Grove during Tuesday’s meeting informing the trustees that he checked Sharon Township roads, replaced clamp at turbo and downpipe on the 96 truck, and added brake line antifreeze to dump trucks. He also greased the 96 truck and backhoe, replaced some grease fittings and freed up some pins on the backhoe loader. Unfortunately, Grove also had to pick up roadkill on Funk Road and hauled it to the landfill. He also picked up grease at Cole’s, finished greasing the backhoe, looked at electrical wires on the Western Star truck, and picked up trash bags on Funk Road.

Grove then reported that he spread berm on Hummel road, checked fuses and wire connections on the Western Star truck, greased the snow plows, salted the roads, washed the equipment, and tried to locate a new coil for the Western Star trucks. He also had to replace the auger motor and bearing on the 96 salt spreader. He finished by reporting that if there is a trash bag or large amounts of trash on the side of the road, they are to call the Solid Waste Office and the county deputy will investigate.

Trustee Kevin Schumacher reported that he checked roads and suggested that Grove add gravel to Kuhn and State Street. Trustee Adam Schroeder then reported that he composed a resident complaint form and forwarded to the resident who requested it. He plans to meet Stan Cain over a sign at the garage. Lastly, Jason Snyder reported that he helped Grove on Saturday morning. He also had questions about deer disposal and discussed what to do for future deer carcasses. Snyder finished by planning a discussion about this week’s snow storm.

The next Sharon Township Trustees meeting is scheduled for February 6 at 7:30PM in Shelby at the Sutter Rouch Room.
