Solid pitching and timely hitting led Shelby boys baseball to a 5-0 victory over River Valley on Tuesday at River Valley.

Nic Eyster and Karsen Homan combined for a shutout and the Whippets made the most of their base runners, stranding only four runners in the win and scoring three runs with two outs.

Eyster picked up the win, pitching six innings of shutout ball, scattering five hits, striking out two and allowing only one walk. Homan pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two batters.

Jon Amicone spoke of his pitchers’ efficiency. “Nic was very efficient tonight,” Amicone said. “It allowed our defense to work behind him.”

“The difference from today and yesterday was night and day, we only walked one batter compared to 11 yesterday,” Amicone said.

The Whippets jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Alex Bruskotter doubled, Eli Schwemley was hit by a pitch and Quinton Albert singled to left field.

Bruskotter scored after the hit was misplayed and Schwemley and Albert advanced a base. Issiah Beck grounded out to score Schwemley and the

Whippets led 2-0.

Shelby scored another run in the second inning. Tanner Hartz lined a single to left field, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Canden Dorsey and scored on a two out single by Eyster.

The teams played scoreless baseball until Shelby added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with two outs. After an out, Hartz walked, Dorsey laid down a sacrifice bunt and again Eyster scored Hartz on an RBI, two out single. Eyster moved to second on an error and scored on an RBI single by Bruskotter.

Amicone spoke about his team’s timely hitting, “We were able to get a few 2-out RBIS that have eluded us the last few games, it was good to see the lineup create runs together. We did a better job of putting the ball in play and only struck out twice. We want to put pressure on the opposition both offensively and defensively and we did a better job of that tonight”

Eyster, Bruskotter and Albert each had two hits. Bruskotter and Albert hit doubles. Hartz had a base hit.

The Whippets, now 6-2, 2-1, host River Wednesday night, then travel to Harding onfriday night, both games are conference matchups.
