Shelby softball back in the win column

Shelby Lady Whippets softball picked up a big 8-1 victory over River Valley on Tuesday evening in River Valley.

Alexis Booker pitched a solid game for Shelby, the Lady Whippets took advantage of seven Viking errors and a big fourth inning propelled the Lady Whippets.

Booker pitched a complete game, allowing only one run, giving up seven hits and striking out five to get the win.

Shelby scored two runs in the top of the first with the benefit of three River Valley errors. Natalie Kennard singled, then Mallary Gundrum and Booker reached base on errors to load the bases. Katie Taylor reached on an error to score Kennard, Gundrum scored on another error to make it 2-0.

River Valley scored a run in the bottom of the third, but the Lady Whippets answered with five runs in the top of the fourth.

Karlie Walp singled, Kennedy Studer walked and Lexi Mohn singled to load the bases. Kendal Parsons singled to score Walp, Kennard was hit by a pitch that scored Studer.

Gundrum then ripped a two-run RBI that knocked in Mohn and Parsons. Kennard and Gundrum both scored on another RV error to make the score 7-1.

Shelby coach Sami Martin spoke about her team’s performanc­e and rebounding from a threegame losing streak.

“Today before the game we talked to the girls about the key to the game being not leaving runners stranded on base, that is something in the past vs. River Valley we have done,” Martin said.

“Tonight the girls did a really great job of working the count, seeing a lot of pitches, and getting the timely hits,” Martin continued.

“We also made some adjustment­s from the weekend with our defense. We were playing on our heels, and it was nice to see the girls be aggressive and trust their training,” Martin added. “Lexi Booker pitched a really great game for us.”

Mallary Gundrum ripped three hits, including

a triple and double. Gundrum also had two RBIS. Parsons and Walp each had two hits, one of Parsons’ hits was a double. Kennard and Maggie Bogner each had a base hit.

Shelby now 9-4, 7-0 on the season, entertain River Valley Wednesday evening.
