Roebuck elected to Board of Directors

- By Michael Burchfiel Staff Writer mburchfiel@nwadg.com

There will be a new face on the Siloam Springs Board of Directors when the new year begins. Three seats on the board were up for election this year, along with the mayor’s seat. Directors Carol Smiley and Bob Coleman both ran unopposed to retain their spots on the governing body, and Mayor John Mark Turner was not opposed in his bid to retain the office of mayor.

Lucas Roebuck defeated Don Cundiff for the only contested seat. The open position on the board was seat 5, an at-large seat vacated by Scott Jones earlier this year and filled by Jerry Cavness on an interim basis. Cavness did not seek a full term on the board.

“I’ve stood for election before, and whenever I’ve run, I’ve always done well in Siloam Springs,” Roebuck said after the win. “Any elected position, it’s an honor to serve and it’s a responsibility to serve and do well.”

Roebuck won the election by a margin of 1,750 votes, according to unofficial county results.

“And also I have a lot of respect for Don (Cundiff),” Roebuck said. “I don’t think some of his viewpoints reflect the voters that you saw on the returns, but that doesn’t take anything away from Don. He’s very vocal and I hope he continues to do that.”

Roebuck said he will be looking for ways to fix city ordinances that create undue burdens on residents. He wouldn’t say specifically what, but there are a few issues on his radar.

Another priority for Roebuck is making sure the city is being responsible with tax money and not being wasteful, especially as the budget is being discussed.

In other races, Major Shawn Holloway won the election for County Sheriff with 71 percent of the vote, Justice of the Peace Barry Moehring won County Judge with 74 percent of the vote and Michael Savage won Constable with 77 percent of the vote.

Representative Rebecca Petty, Austin McCollum and Representative Grant Hodges all won State Representative races, and Congressman Steve Womack and Senator John Boozman both retained their seats.
