Tim Rippy believes the Siloam Springs girls basketball team is making strides in the right direction, even if it’s not showing up in the win-column.

The Lady Panthers lost their sixth straight game Friday night as Greenwood used a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to take control in a 45-40 5A/6A District 1 victory over Siloam Springs at Panther Activity Center.

The Lady Panthers led most of the game, taking the lead in the second quarter and not trailing until the fourth. But in the fourth, Siloam Springs had six turnovers on its first 10 possessions, which allowed Greenwood to turn the tide.

The Lady Panthers made a late charge at the end and pulled within four, but Greenwood hit enough free throws to preserve the win.

“We couldn’t score enough to get back over the hump once they got the lead,” Rippy said. “But I’m proud of them. I thought we competed our rears off physically. … You know, don’t give up on this team yet. We’re playing hard and we’re getting better, and we’re right there. We’re right there, and I think they know it. They’re starting to sense it.”

It was the first league win for the Lady Bulldogs (9-10, 1-3), while Siloam Springs (4-16, 0-6) is still searching for its first.

“Our conference is well-balanced,” said Greenwood coach Clay Reeves. “All of our games have been close, just like all their games have been close. Our kids, they took care of the ball at the end, made the right decisions. We got a few turnovers there at the end and we just want to capitalize on all those free throws. We’re growing and understanding the game more and learning more every day.”

Greenwood trailed 27-25 going into the fourth quarter, and the Lady Bulldogs tied the game on a basket by freshman Harley Terry, one of two ninth-graders who saw extensive playing time for Greenwood. Sara Reeves hit two free throws with 6 minutes, 14 seconds left to give Greenwood the lead for good.

Chloe Price got the Lady Panthers within 29-28 with a free throw, but Greenwood scored the next nine points. Baleigh Wiginton converted a threepoint play, and Susannah Stein and Wiginton each hit a pair of free throws. Reeves had another basket to push the lead to 38-28. Price ended the run with a free throw, but freshman Jaelin Glass scored to give Greenwood its biggest lead at 40-29.

Siloam Springs answered with a 10-3 run to pull within 43-39, taking advantage of some missed free throws by Greenwood.

The Lady Panthers paid special attention defensively to sophomore guard Kyiah Julian, often face-guarding her throughout the game. Julian finished with 10 points but had plenty of help from her teammates. Glass finished with nine and Sara Reeves added eight for Greenwood.

Price led Siloam Springs with 13 points, while Morgan Vaughn had 12 and Hadlee Hollenback nine, Kenlie Noel three, Emery Brown two and Alexis Roach one.
