Classical Conversations celebrates National School Choice Week
Students and parents at Classical Conversations Home Education Group celebrated National School Choice Week on Tuesday.
Students and parents wore yellow School Choice scarves and wrote down reasons they love Classical Conversions, according to director Aleasie Weathers, director of the school’s kindergarten through sixth-grade program.
National School Choice Week is held each January to shine a positive light on all the educational options for every child, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, online learning, private schools and homeschooling, according to a press release from the organization. More than 20,000 events were planned throughout
the country last week, the release stated.
Siloam Springs has many excellent educational options, Weathers said. Classical Conversations wanted to be a part of the National School Choice Week celebration because the students, parents and grandparents value their freedom of choice, she said.
Classical Conversations offers students and parents the best of home schooling and a school community. The school supports homeschoolers by giving them accountability and community, Weathers said.
“Home schooling and Classical Conversations has given us freedom in our learning and a chance to spend time on subjects that are more challenging,” Weathers said. “Our kids are learning to think critically and really enjoy meeting up with their friends each week to learn. The camaraderie and like-mindedness is refreshing.”
The local group meets in Sager Creek Community Church once a week for 12 weeks each semester. They hold a community day where students in grades prekindergarten through 12 learn subjects such as Latin, geography, science, history, English and math. They also do science experiments, practice public speaking and explore fine arts together.
“Home schooling has helped me become more well-rounded in my education and has furthered my thinking skills,” said student Landon Hildebrand. “It also provides a more flexible schedule, making it easier to adjust.”
Classical Conversations has had a community in Siloam Springs for three years. The local group is part of a larger organization, which serves 90,000 students in nine countries around the world.
“My children and I love learning together and Classical Conversations helps broaden and enrich that experience through multiple subjects, all to know God’s world better and be able to share that with others,” said parent Leah Dennis.
The school is hosting an Excellence in Education Event for community leaders at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. Students will be presenting memory work they have learned so far this year, as well as music and art. Lunch will be provided following the presentation.
