50 Years Ago: Allens unprecedented growth
50 Years Ago From the Herald and
Democrat in 1967 The Allens Canning Company and subsidiary companies, oldest of the major industries in Siloam Springs, was going through a period of unprecedented growth and development. Sales had made substantial increases in recent years, which demanded that factories be enlarged and modernized, more warehouses built, more people employed and more transportation used.
Allens had operated for several years, four plants. The No. 1 plant, the newest and most modern, was located on the site of the original plant about 7 miles northeast of Siloam Springs. A large plant was operated in Siloam Springs and was located near the K.C. Depot. The third plant and a rapidly growing one, was in Gentry. The fourth plant was in Kansas, Okla. Just recently a fifth plant had been purchased in
Looking Back
Proctor, Okla.
The newest project was the plan for the complete remodeling of the General Offices on East Main Street.
Mr. Delbert E. Allen Sr., president, made the following statement: “We at Allens are proud to be a part of the community of Siloam springs. This has always been our home and this is where our greatest facilities are built … And although our growth demands that we push out and make acquisitions such as the canning plant in Proctor, Okla., Siloam Springs will always be our base of operations….” 30 Years Ago From the Herald-Democrat in 1987 The Siloam Springs Panthers hit 12 of 14 free throw attempts in the overtime period and beat Stilwell 63-55, to win the Miami Tournament.
Donny Osbourn scored 20 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and Jeff Butts scored 14 points to lead the Panthers in a game that saw the lead change hands 17 times.
