Windgate West showcases student art
John Brown University students will get a chance to put their own artwork on display at the annual Student Works Show.
The show, now in its 29th year, includes a wide variety of work with categories in graphic design, digital cinema, photography and illustration, according to Charles Peer, gallery director. It is organized by the Visual Arts Foundry student organization.
A gallery opening will be held in the Windgate Visual Arts Center West from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday as part of the family weekend festivities. Because of the special weekend, the gallery will also be open for extended
hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday so that family members can attend. The exhibit will continue to be on display until March 16.
The show is popular with community members because of the diversity of art mediums and the quality of the student work, Peer said.
“I am very, very proud of the skill level represented,” Peer said.
A total of 55 students are participating in the show and have entered 126 pieces, said Jeannie Abbott, executive assistant.
The show is open to all students on campus, whether or not they are enrolled in the art program, Peer said.
The artwork will be judged by independent experts in each field from the community, Peer said.
The top three students in each category will receive a cash prize at the school’s annual Arties Awards, inspired by the Academy Awards, on March 10, Abbot said.
The Windgate Visual Arts West Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
