50 Years Ago From the Herald and Democrat in 1967 Town & Country Supermarke­t’s specials advertised in the Herald and Democrat were: chuck steak, 57¢ a pound; sirloin steak and round steak 77¢ a pound; Tbone steak, 97¢ a pound; club steak, 87¢ a pound; ground beef, 47¢ a pound; beef short ribs, 47¢ a pound; rump roast, 67¢ a pound; apples, 15¢ a pound; cabbage, 7¢ a pound; potatoes, 55¢ for a 10-pound bag; bread, 4 loaves for 89¢; eggs, 3 dozen for 99¢; and candy bars or pack of gum, 3¢ each. 30 Years Ago From the Herald-Democrat in 1987 Siloam Springs native, Mildred Guilliams Britt, a then-resident of Colorado, generously donated 30 photograph­s and several items of

archival material to the Siloam Springs Museum. Those items primarily dated to the 1920s and included many large 8 by 10 black and white photograph­s of the city and surrounds.

Among the donated photos were a view of Gypsy Camp with the girls in costume, two views of the 1927 flood, the John Brown University Drum Corps and several local businessme­n costumed to participat­e in a minstrel show. There were also some Britt family and Guilliams family photograph­s.

Benton County, Arkansas, in Pictures and Prose, a 1926 promotiona­l publicatio­n, was among the other archival material. It described Siloam Springs, the “City of Fountains,” as “Bright with the resplenden­cy of culture, throbbing with the life blood of industry and commerce, which seeks only to find a more liberal and widely extended expression…” The town at the time had a population of 4,000, a “well-equipped campground,” “one of the best systems of schools of any town of its size in Arkansas,” and many businesses. 10 years Ago From the Herald-Leader in 2006 late Delbert The E. Allen Sr., was one of four Arkansas business leaders awarded the 2007 Arkansas Business Hall of Fame honor in ceremonies at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.

Allen’s four children, Delbert E. “Pete” Allen Jr., Rick Allen, Linda Brown and Cheryl Harrison, all of Siloam Springs, attended the ceremony to accept the award posthumous­ly for their father. A large group of grandchild­ren, other family members, employees and friends also were present.

Delbert E. Allen Sr., who built one of the largest privately-held vegetable canning facilities in the United States with headquarte­rs in Siloam Springs, was an icon in the business world.
