SSHS theater presents Buckshot and Blossoms
The Siloam Springs High School theater department’s newest production promises jokes, action, romance and nasty schemes.
High school students will be presenting the western comedy “Buckshot and Blossoms,” written by Tim Kelly, on April 8 and 9.
The ninety-minute play is described as “a rip-roaring saga of the Old West sure to delight audiences of all ages.”
Student director Isaiah Snyder said that theater students were looking to try a western comedy, and mutually chose “Buckshot and Blossoms.” He said the play includes plenty of jokes, action, romance and nasty schemes.
The cast and crew include more than 25 students in grades nine through 12. Snyder said it has been fun to watch students get into character as they develop their backgrounds and accents.
The play is set in the Trail Dust Hotel, where the villain,
Whip, spends his time looking for trouble with his partner-in-crime, cheating card dealer Pearl of the Pecos. Controversy arises when the newspaper editor hires a new sheriff to keep order, and townspeople begin to dispute the ownership of a local mine.
The play includes colorful characters, such as gunslinger The Durango Kid, Cactus Kate, Widder Jones, the mayor’s wife who can only sing one song, and the fabulously wealthy Nellie Rectangle. As the plot takes shape, a wedding is held and the sheriff and The Durango Kid play high-noon in the hotel lobby.
Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 8, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 9. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free for ages 5 and under, and will be available for sale at the door.
