The Siloam Springs Board of Directors tackled a short agenda on Tuesday, approving a trailer purchase and several planning measures. Directors Steve Beers and Amy Smith were absent.

Prior to the presentation of the first agenda item, American Legion members Denver Whitehead and Don Cundiff gave a presentation to two people present at the meeting. City Clerk Renae Ellis and Director Brad Burns were both recognized for their contributions to last year’s Veterans Day parade.

Cundiff introduced Whitehead as the new head of the parade committee and announced that this year’s parade would be bigger than in previous years because the American Legion plans to partner with the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In the past, the two groups have hosted separate events to commemorate the holiday.

First on the agenda was a request for a trailer from MAC Trailer. The purchase was prompted by a sanitation department request for a second walking floor trailer to serve in a rotation with a similar trailer purchased last year.

The existing trailer is used to haul trash to Tulsa, replacing a service the city had contracted to haul the trash. The new trailer will have roughly a 20-year lifespan, said Don Tennison, who is the city’s solid waste superintendent.

Tennison said the trailer will save the city around $25,000 per year, paying for its $62,441 price tag in under three years. The purchase had a budget of $87,500.

The remaining four agenda items, all ordinances, were introduced to the board during the board meeting on March 7 and each was placed on its first reading. Three of the four ordinances were rezoning permits, and the fourth was an annexation ordinance for a project related to one of the rezoning permit applications.

The board placed all four ordinances on their second and third readings before adopting them. They were for rezoning 1803 Dawn Hill Road to R-2 and A-1, rezoning 471 South Lincoln Street to C-2, and annexing and rezoning Camp Siloam. The camp was rezoned to G-I.
