Wire-wrapped jewelry a feature at Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show

-

When it comes to rocks, most people think that is “Man’s Work.”

It may depend on what is happening to the rocks.

When it comes to jaspers, agates, malachites and other really pretty rocks, Connie McGarrah of Colcord, Okla., just loves to handle them. McGarrah is a member of the Northwest Arkansas Gem & Mineral Society, and has come to appreciate many colored stones.

So much so that she learned to do wire-wrapped jewelry to show off her pretty stones as wearables.

McGarrah has been doing wire-wrapped jewelry for more than 10 years and has become very good at it. She will be demonstrating her wire techniques at the spring Gem, Mineral and Jewelry show on April 8-9 at the Siloam Springs Community Building.

The public is invited to come to the show and visit the vendors who will have minerals, fossils, jewelry and other lapidary-related items for sale. There will also be educational display cases to help expand the public’s knowledge of stones. And to show off some of the club member’s rock collections. There will also be lapidary and flint knapping demonstrations.

The show is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 8, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 9.

Admission is $3 donation for adult visitors. Children under 10 are free when accompanied by an adult.

There will also be door prizes, a silent auction, grab bags, and vendors who are very happy to “talk rocks” with visitors to the show.

“This is a great place to spend a few hours with the family learning more about the earth sciences and finding pretty rocks,” said DeLane Cox, Show Publicity Chair.
