Beever leads Lady Panthers in win against Greenwood
FORT SMITH — The Siloam Springs girls golf team picked up their second straight victory Thursday, edging Greenwood 268-271 in an 18-hole match played at Ben Geren Golf Course.
It was Siloam Springs’ first victory over Greenwood this season, after the Lady Bulldogs finished ahead of the Lady Panthers in two previous tournaments in Springdale and Mountain Home.
“Big win for our girls,” said Siloam Springs golf coach Michael Robertson. “For a long time Greenwood has been a team to beat in girls golf and that hasn’t changed. Lots of positives from yesterday individually and as a team.
“It was a huge win for our confidence. They know they can beat (Greenwood) now, but like I told the girls, now we have to put it behind us and go back to work. Next week is another week to get better and we will.”
Senior Brinkley Beever shot a low round of 76 to beat Greenwood’s Sydnie Gamble (78) by two strokes. Gamble finished ahead of Beever in the previous two tournaments.
“Brinkley has been on the edge of a mid-70s round for a while and is starting to do it now,” Robertson said. “Great to see her compete at a high level against great competition.”
Junior McKenzie Blanchard added a 95 and junior Kaitlyn Robinson shot a 97 to round out Siloam Springs’ scores. Junior Kendall McCormick shot a personal best 98 and junior Jaelee Snyder shot a 115 for Siloam Springs.
“It was exciting to see McKenzie and Kaitlyn compete hard for 18 holes,” Robertson said. “It was a day where maybe they didn’t always hit it like they wantedm but they hung around for 18 holes and put together some of their best shots down the stretch.”
Jordyn Lane shot a 95 for Greenwood, while Jaelee Mahetau shot 98, Ella Austin 102 and Erin Gilbert 125 to round out Greenwood’s five players.
Bentonville West was also at the match and shot a team score of 372.
Boys
Greenwood’s Evan Griffith shot a low round of 70 as the Bulldogs defeated Siloam Springs and West with a team round of 306.
The Wolverines shot a score of 320, while the Panthers came in at 344.
Junior Karson Clement led the Panthers wit a 78, while sophomore Luke Baker shot 86, junior Chase Beyer 89, junior Josh Johnson 91 and sophomore Evan Sauer 95.
“It was good to see Karson get back closer to where he expects himself to be,” Robertson said. “He got back to striking the ball well and put up a solid round.
“Luke was a poor start from a good round. When he strikes the ball well he has a chance to score well. We are getting better in many areas — just haven’t put it all together yet. They will get there. Next week is another week with two great opportunities to get better.”
Nathan Munday added a 77 for Greenwood, while Brad Brotherton shot 78 and Brady Fein 81.
