Nealon’s tiebreaking goal helps JBU women win in Texas
FORT WORTH, Texas — Freshman Sienna Nealon booted her team-leading third game-winner just more than a minute after Texas Wesleyan tied the match, and the John Brown University women’s soccer team rolled to a 5-1 win at Martin Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (8-20, 2-0-0 Sooner Athletic) scored a pair of goals via header, including Nealon’s, while junior Jastin Redman posted a five-point outing, the most of any player this year, with a pair of goals and an assist. Redman struck twice in the second half in the 51st and 76th minutes, netting consecutive unassisted tallies for insurance.
Junior Anna Brown notched her fourth goal of the season in the 84th minute when she buried a Paige Kula cross from the left flank with her head at the back post.
Nealon’s game-winner came 63 seconds after Wesleyan’s Taylor Ross tied the game 1-1 in the 36th minute. Nealon finished off senior Samantha Weber’s corner kick at the back post with authority for her fifth of the season.
Senior Hannah Poor continued her surprising field play with a fourth tally this season in the 26th minute to open the scoring. Junior Anne Metz’s free kick from behind the midfield marker found Redman on the flank for a perfect cross to Poor waiting just four yards away from TWU keeper Christy Zwart.
Zwart made six saves, but took the loss with JBU’s 11 shots on frame. Freshman Maggie Allen remained perfect this season, making four saves on five chances, moving to 2-0-0. The visitors held a 27-12 shooting advantage.
The Golden Eagles will now welcome Wayland Baptist (Texas) to Alumni Field for a 5 p.m. tilt on Thursday. The Pioneers (2-6-0, 1-1-0) had lost six straight before besting Central Christian (Kan.) 2-0 on Saturday.
