Juxtaposition: New exhibition opens at John Brown University Main Gallery
The work of Sean Fitzgibbon, a Fayetteville artist and designer, is on display at John Brown University’s Main Gallery through Dec. 14.
The works in Fitzgibbon’s exhibit, titled Juxtaposition, contrasts multiple elements to explore the interconnectivity in the real world. The exhibit includes 21 twodimensional realist works in a wide variety of media.
Fitzgibbon uses interconnectedness, layers, time and space to propel viewers into the images so they can explore as a participant, according to a press release from JBU.
“The passage of time is a major theme of my work because I am intrigued by how chronology and space become disoriented in the unconscious mind,” Fitzgibbon said.
Fitzgibbon’s works are narrative, but they do not follow the expected linear narrative or timeline. Like a dream or memory, his works sometimes reveal and at other times obscure, often in the same work. This interest in storytelling, and blurring the lines in those stories, lie at the heart of Fitzgibbon’s work.
Not surprisingly, Fitzgibbon’s interest in narratives have led him to create and illustrate books and graphic novels. His current project is a documentarystyle graphic novel that chronicles the Norman Baker years (1937-39) of the famously haunted Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs.
The John Brown University Main Gallery is located in the Windgate Visual Arts West building on the John Brown University campus. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
