City eyeing purchase of asphalt compactor

The purchase of an asphalt compactor and approval of a contract for architectural services for fire station No. 2 are among the agenda items for Tuesday’s city board of directors meeting.

The regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 3 in the board room at City Hall.

City board members are expected to vote on whether or not to purchase a new $106,822 asphalt compactor from Riggs CAT in Springdale, according to a staff report in the city board packet.

In 2015, the city purchased equipment, including two smaller asphalt compactors, so that paving projects can be completed in-house. The current

compactors have been found to be too small to compact asphalt before it cools, the report said. The new asphalt compactor weighs 3,500 pounds and is more than twice the size of both of the city’s current compactors combined. It will help city crews compact asphalt to “maximum density” before it becomes too cool, the report states.

City board members are also expected to vote on whether to approve a contract with Matthias Pearson for architectural services for a remodel of Fire Station No. 2.

A request for qualifications for the project went out in early February and solicited 10 responses from interested firms, the staff report in the city board packet states. City staff members determined that Pearson was the most qualified and the best fit for the project.

The city’s 2018 budget includes $1.75 million for the renovation of the fire station and architectural services are estimated to cost 8.5 percent of the total, or about $127,500, the report states.

Other agenda items include the following:

• The second reading of Ordinance 18-06 amending municipal electrical code

• The first reading of Ordinance 18-07 for a prohibited use development permit for resident Bill Parker

• Resolution 12-18 for a significant development permit for a 17,500-squarefoot airport hangar at Smith Air Field

• Resolution 13-18 for a significant development permit for a poultry supply store and warehouse on East Main

• Resolution 14-18 for a facility usage agreement with the Siloam Springs Flyers swim club for usage of the Family Aquatic Center for practices and meets.
