50 Years Ago: Heralded film ‘Doctor Zhivago’ shows at Spot Looking Back
50 Years Ago From the Herald and
Democrat in 1968 Dale Smith, manager of the Spot Theatre announced the signing of contracts with representatives of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures, for the showing of their all-time Road Show Champion, “Doctor Zhivago.”
According to Mr. Smith, the successful engagement of the Road Show, “Hawaii,” was largely responsible for his being able to secure “Doctor Zhivago.”
Because of the length of “Doctor Zhivago” (3 hours and 17 minutes), there was one performance nightly, starting at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
Prices were the same at all performances. Advance tickets sold at the Spot Theatre for $1.50, Adults, and children, 75¢.
30 Years Ago From the Herald-Democrat in 1988 Members of the Siloam Springs Senior Activity Center participated in the Senior Olympics held in Harrison. The athletes brought back medals in activities ranging from timed distance walks to riding stationary bikes, standing broad jumps and timed nail driving contests. Those who participated were: Maggie Lieblang, Josef Lieblang, Lalian McQuay, Freda Coomer, Marvine Davis, Dora Winder, Vivian Stockton, Florence Dillard and Harry Wegemer.

Former Siloam Springs High School baseball standout Jacob Gill received NAIA all-conference honors for the second-straight year. The Mid-America Nazarene University outfielder finished the 2008 season with a .366 batting average in 42 games, compiling one home run, two triples and 11 doubles. He also scored 25 runs and drove in 18 RBIs.
Gill’s on-base percentage was .442, while his slugging percentage was .504.
Gill also excelled off the field at Mid-America Nazarene University. His grade-point average for the first three years at the NAIA institution was 3.8.
Gill is a 2005 graduate of Siloam Springs High School and a 4-year letterman for the Panthers.
He is the son of Vicki Gill of Siloam Springs and the grandson of Wilma Jean Hartley and the late Jim Hartley.
